This two-storey house, which is located in the settlement “Apollonion” in Porto Rafti, last project of the famous Konstantinos Doxiadis, was renovated in order to meet the needs of a large family.
The design challenge was to understand and realize the return to the basic principles of the project, with targeted interventions, which aimed to restore those elements that characterized the architecture of the settlement.
The house, which is constructed of both stone and reinforced concrete, consists of two levels which expand into their respective courtyards. On the upper level, where the main entrance is located, one can find the living room, dining room, kitchen as well as the master bedroom with its bathroom. An internal staircase leads to the lower level which includes four bedrooms and three bathrooms as well as the auxiliary spaces of the house.
The main feature of Doxiadis’ architecture was the choice of natural, simple elements, which, would give the idea that “Apollonion” had submerged from the earth and in collaboration with nature, would be part of its environment.
Thus, the existing floor of Karystos slabs was maintained while the balcony’s railing was replaced with that of Doxiadis’ original design, and that of the external staircase, with a stone construction. On it was imprinted a characteristic architectural gesture of Doxiadis with the small square windows and concrete frame, element which is repeated in various parts throughout the settlement. In addition, earth-coloured, raw materials were selected which, combined with modern furniture featuring special colour tones, gave the house the required freshness.
